Job Summary/Basic Function

Middle Tennessee State University's Department of Recording Industry is seeking a highly creative individual to join our faculty in the area of commercial songwriting as a full-time, tenure-track faculty position (#145140) at the rank of assistant/associate professor. The ideal candidate will be a high-caliber songwriter, performer, and lyricist with a proven track record of success. The start date for the position is August 1, 2022. The position is contingent upon funding.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of professional work as a songwriter and is expected to teach basic and advanced courses in commercial songwriting as well as other courses in their area of expertise (performance, production, writing for specific genres, media, history, or etc). It is also expected that the candidate will conduct research and/or creative activity in their areas of specialization. A demonstrated excellence in teaching, research/creative activity, and service and an interest in working in a diverse workplace with a multicultural student body, faculty, and staff is also expected.

Required Education

A terminal degree is required. In lieu of a terminal degree, a Master's degree plus six (6) years of professional experience in the music industry, or a bachelor's degree plus eight (8) years of professional experience in the music industry may be considered.

Required Related Experience

At least five (5) years of professional experience in the music industry is required. Please also NOTE the in lieu of experience required that is listed under required education.

Other Desirables

Candidates with any of the following will receive special consideration:

  • Proven success writing commercial songs in genres such as pop; rock; hip-hop; R&B; film and television; gaming; and etc.
  • Experience teaching college-level courses and curriculum development.
  • Evidence of strong industry relationships nationally and internationally.
  • Proficiency in one or more of the following disciplines: music recording, demo production, programming, performing, artist development/A&R, or publishing.
  • Proficiency with presentation technology, online course delivery tools, and music technology.
