March 26 & 27

Research at the Highest Level --
Professional meetings like the annual spring MEIEA conference provide
invaluable information necessary for currency in the constantly
changing field of music industry, and the MEIEA conference in Miami
(2010) was no exception. In addition to over 30 keynote sessions,
roundtables, panel discussions and presentations, we were treated
to twelve academic research paper presentations, presented by MEIEA
faculty from both the United States and the United Kingdom
Research
for several was partially funded through the MEIEA grant program.
Topics included fair use and parody, termination notices and copyright,
devaluation of mechanicals, update on the long-tail theory, the Russian
recording industry, personal music branding, music downloading and the
consumer, the impact of late night television performances on the sale
of recorded music, developing an audio engineering competency model, an
integrative learning model in music management, new music
entrepreneurs, and the integration of music business, audio and
performance.
Thanks to Bruce Ronkin, MEIEA Board member and grant and research paper
coordinator, and all the researchers, for their hard
work! The opportunities for us to learn from other
professionals’ research and experience are unlimited.
Looking forward to more in spring 2011!

From A to Z – Ivan Alvarez to Michael Zager
– the spring 2010 MEIEA conference in Miami, Florida offered something
for everyone! In addition to over 30 roundtables, panel
discussions and presentations, the insightful words of keynote speakers
Pharrell Williams, Phil Ramone, and John Potter; ; and a master class
by Tom Jackson.
Pharrell Williams, Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter/producer, is
one of the most successful and prolific entertainers and business
entrepreneurs to emerge during the last decade. Phil Ramone, with
34 Grammy nominations and 14 Awards plus an Emmy, is often described as
one of the world’s top creative producers. Together,
Pharrell and Phil talked to a pack house about their journey in the
industry, offering invaluable advice and points of wisdom to students
and faculty alike.
John Potter, entertainment attorney most recently serving as Executive
Director of the Digital Media Association, spoke to another full
auditorium about the legal land and policy interests of companies
including Amazon.com, Apple iTunes, and YouTube.
Tom Jackson entertained a standing-room-only crowd with advice and
stories about providing artists such as Taylor Swift, Jars of Clay, and
Casting Clowns tips on how to connect emotionally with their
audiences. He’s also developed a series of teaching DVDs and CDs
that offer a variety of tools for everyone from the beginning artist to
the artist that has been onstage for years. In addition, Tom
Jackson Productions also partners with non-profit organizations and
helps them establish and staff their artist associate programs.
