CORAL GABLES, FL – October
10, 2007-- Peermusic has entered into a world-wide administration
agreement with Cat 5 Music Publishing, a company operated
by graduate students in the Music Business and Entertainment
Industries (MBEI) program at the University of Miami’s
Frost School of Music. This unprecedented liaison will bring
unique benefits to both parties: Cat 5 will profit from
peermusic’s worldwide administrative and creative
support, while peermusic will tap into a new source of music
discovered by Cat 5’s talented and perpetually young
creative team.
This first-of-its-kind relationship
was born when Ralph Peer II learned of Cat 5 during a meeting
with Dr. William Hipp, Dean Emeritus of the Frost School,
and James A. Progris, Chair of the Music, Media and Industry
Department, and suggested that both companies “find
a way to work together.”
“I’m a great believer
that ‘learning by doing’ is an important part
of an overall academic program designed for future professionals.”
Peer continued,” Such preparation by an institution
of the stature of the University of Miami is critical to
the long term viability of the music business and the creative
talent it serves. I think of this agreement as much more
than a commercial venture – it’s a symbiotic
opportunity for peermusic to participate in the thinking
of the next generation of
composers and music executives while simultaneously providing
them with access to an experienced worldwide team of professionals.”
“The creative team at Cat5
is plugged into a network of hundreds of great young musicians
from within the Frost School and beyond.” says Dean
Shelton Berg, “These relationships are a vital link
to the discovery of new songs and new composing talent.
We are very enthused about the symbiosis between peermusic
and Cat5.”
“As a graduate of University
of Miami’s Music Industry Program, I find the idea
of initiating this relationship as more than just exciting:
it is logical and innovative. UM’s everlasting source
of talent, combined with peermusic’s global reach
and its historically proven expertise in the publishing
industry, will create unprecedented opportunities for catalogue
acquisition, development and exploitation,” says Ramón
Arias, Vice President of Latin Operations for peermusic.
Seventy-eight years after establishing
its first copyright, peermusic can proudly claim to be a
major and still-independent publisher. From its very beginnings,
under the keen vision of legendary founder Ralph S. Peer,
peermusic has consistently and relentlessly broken new ground
on its way to becoming home to some of the best and brightest
talent in music. Peermusic now boasts a 300,000-song-title
catalog, and has more than 200 employees in 32 offices and
27 countries. Peermusic represents legendary writer/producer
David Foster (The Power of Love – Celine Dion, Because
We Believe –Andrea Bocelli), R&B writer/producer
Tricky Stewart (Case of The Ex – Mya, Me Against The
Music – Madonna & Britney Spears, Umbrella –
Rihanna), Latin superstar Juanes and Donovan, among many
others. For more information on peermusic, visit their Web

Cat 5 Music Publishing has the distinction
of being the first graduate student-run music publishing
company in the nation. Established in 2002, the company
is staffed by master’s candidates in the Music Business
and Entertainment Industries Program at the Frost School
of Music. It is overseen by Program Director Rey Sanchez
and music publishing veteran John Redmond. Cat 5 is a full-service
publishing company, constantly seeking new music to place
in films, television, commercials, multi-media, recordings,
and other outlets. Recently, the company placed several
songs in the internationally released motion picture “Gringo
Wedding” for which it also provided music supervision
services. For more information on Cat 5 or the MBEI program
