Don’t wait too long to register for the 2006 Music Industry Education Summit co-sponsored by NARAS and MEIEA on Saturday, November 11th at Belmont University. Seating is limited for this hands-on workshop with industry professionals. The power sessions will address four major areas in the music industry: Publishing/Licensing, Record Label Operations, Management/Marketing, and Record Technology/Production. Cost is only $60 for MEIEA members and the price includes lunch, an opening reception at 6:00 pm Friday evening at Belmont’s Curb Café, and a reception at the Recording Academy headquarter
immediately following the workshop. Sign up now at http://meiea.org/Summit/summit.html

In addition to the Summit, you will also want to make plans now to attend the 2007 MEIEA International Conference on March 23-24 in downtown LA. Dave Kopplin (Cal Poly Pomona) will serve as our host for this event. Keep checking the website at www.meiea.org as details are made available.

MEISA students will also have several opportunities to attend workshops with five regional conferences scheduled to take place this fall. Two are Midwest Regional Conferences, one at the University of Memphis and the other at Butler University (Indianapolis, IN). Also, the Southeast Regional Conference will be hosted by Loyola University New Orleans, the University of Colorado at Denver will host the Western Regional Conference, and the University of Massachusetts Lowell will host the Northeast Regional Conference. Please encourage your students to support the regional conference in your area.

The first MEIEA Research Grant has been awarded to John Kellogg, Assistant Chair of the Music Business/Management at Berklee College of Music. Kellogg was awarded $1500 grant for his proposal, “Freeing the Music: An Examination of Proposed Methods of Streamlining the Process of Licensing of Music for Sale on the Internet.” His research will be documented in the MEIEA Journal and presented at the 2007 conference in LA. The grant is the first of three awards that will be made available to educators and industry practitioners for scholarly research in music and entertainment industries.
