WISDOM FROM THE WEB

Greetings Readers, and welcome to the last edition (at least for this year) of Wisdom From the Web. I’m not sure how many folks have time at this point in the year to be hunting down websites, but just in case you need a break from grading final projects and exams, here are some places you might want to check out.

First for you this month is www.musicdish.com. This is a pretty developed site, with lots of articles, and even a link to myspace!?! I got caught up reading their lead article this morning, “When Dollars And Cents Meet Heart And Soul”. It is a little dramatic, but makes some good points. You might want to share this with students as a starting point for a discussion on current trends and/or the majors (and the media, for that matter). They also have newsletters that you can sign up for, or news articles you can read on the site. They seem to be a little behind – I don’t know if that is habitual, or just this time of year. I signed up for their newsletter some time back and every once in a while get an interesting headline that I investigate.

Next, we all need to keep our eye on Mr. Spitzer from NY. As you may know, he is (apparently) finished with the record companies, and is now targeting radio stations with his modern day payola investigations. You can do your own search using Spitzer and Entercom to find the latest – but I found this article from MediaWeek at that sums up the most recent developments. I can’t wait to see if the papers the FCC has requested will be leaked like the SONY emails. If they are - and you find the link first – let me know!

My last lead for you to investigate this summer is at www.citibay.com. I’m not quite sure what this site is all about, but I stumbled onto it from this rather extensive link. This link gave a long list of updated (to the minute) industry news. There were lots of interesting looking articles, and as soon as I have a minute I am going to investigate them. In the meantime, it definitely warrants a bookmark. To get to the “goods” from citibay.com, you need to look on the homepage for headline news, after clicking that, look for industry news and use the pull-down menu to choose “Music Business”. I think you will be impressed by the wide array of articles – national and international – that you can access from there. Included in the list is Billboard.biz – something you might want to check out on its own, if you haven’t already.

So, there you have it for the last column of the year. Hope you have a great summer – and stay connected!
