PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
by Becky
Chappell

On
behalf of all who attended the 2006 MEIEA Conference, I would like to
extend special thanks to Keith Hatschek and all the music business
students at the University of the Pacific (Stockton, CA) for hosting
such an incredible event this year! This conference was well organized
and featured many outstanding speakers and panelists who shared the
latest insights on a variety of new music business topics. But if you
didn’t make it to California this year, you will have another
opportunity to visit the Golden State next year. The 2007 MEIEA
Conference will be hosted by Cal
Poly Pomona on March 23-24 where Dave Kopplin will
serve as our conference host.
The
2006 conference is hardly over, and already the newly elected Executive
Board is hard at work making some important changes and planning new
opportunities for faculty. Our newly elected Board includes three
newcomers who will serve on the Board of Directors: Rush Hicks,
(Belmont University), Dave Tough and Bob Garfrerick (both from the
University of North Alabama). Bios for all three newcomers can be found
below.. You may have noticed that we have already put Dave Tough to
work as our new Ezine editor. And while I’m noting important changes, I
want to thank Kim Wangler, Kristél Kemmerer, and Wesley Bulla
for the new look of MEIEA’s website. Be sure
to look at the new design at www.meiea.org.
One
new opportunity for both faculty and industry practitioners is the new MEIEA Research Grant program.
MEIEA is now accepting applications for a $1500 Junior Faculty Grant
for part-time and full-time instructors who have taught less than seven
years at one or more accredited institutions. The application deadline
is coming up soon, June 15th, 2006, and the winner of the grant will be
announced within thirty days of this deadline. This is the first of
three grants that will be made available to educators and industry
practitioners for scholarly research in music and entertainment
industries. Application and more details are available on the website.
Another
great opportunity for educators is a joint venture between MEIEA and
NARAS for MEIEA members held on Belmont’s campus
in Nashville, TN on Saturday, November 11. The 1st Annual Fall Music
Industry Education Summit is a limited-seating, one-day event for music
business educators to meet with industry professionals and mutually
discuss the future of music industry education. More information
regarding registration and schedule, as well as an opportunity for you
to voice your opinion on the format and topics, will soon be coming
your way via email and on the MEIEA website.
The
Board will continue to work over the summer to bring you new programs
and improved benefits for our organization. We welcome your comments,
suggestions, and ideas!
