The rapid growth of
for profit schools and new programs both online and on-ground has led
to the federal government developing new regulations that are intended
to protect students and the use of public monies. The Department of
Education (DOE) has proposed rules that require institutions to apply
to the Department for approval prior to the creation of new programs
that will be subject to gainful employment regulations. This paper
examines these new regulations and the effect they will have on the
future of music industry education. Also examined is the recommendation
by the DOE for the establishment of external agencies to oversee the
validity of programs, such as business advisory committees, program
integrity boards and public or private oversight agencies. (view
