Conference11/Papers/thumbs/strasser.jpgThe rapid growth of for profit schools and new programs both online and on-ground has led to the federal government developing new regulations that are intended to protect students and the use of public monies. The Department of Education (DOE) has proposed rules that require institutions to apply to the Department for approval prior to the creation of new programs that will be subject to gainful employment regulations. This paper examines these new regulations and the effect they will have on the future of music industry education. Also examined is the recommendation by the DOE for the establishment of external agencies to oversee the validity of programs, such as business advisory committees, program integrity boards and public or private oversight agencies.
